BMW has always produced timely, performance-inspired cars that have the potential to make people pant with just a single view.

Which is why it’s no surprise the new i8 has industry heads turning in circles. Hitting the market with a look and form of propulsion that is rare in today’s market, the new i8 is the epitome of BMW engineering.

Powered by a turbo-charged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder hybrid with two electric drive motors, the engine generates a combined 357 hp and 420 ft. lbs. of torque. Couple that with a six-speed automatic turning all four wheels, and what you get is a hybrid Bimmer with a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60 time of 3.8 seconds. This puts the i8 right up there with the Porsche and Corvette, not only able to hang with them but excelling as well. Which is pretty impressive, to say the least.

The i8 also has an aggressive stance and futuristic look with the not quite gull-wing, not quite scissor-style door, giving the open door i8 the appearance of a bird ready to take flight. Upon entering the car, drivers automatically see evidence of the i8’s carbon fiber chassis, the backbone of the car.

The cockpit is as forward-thinking as the rest of the vehicle. The instrument display falls into the realm of futuristic, giving the driver a full digital display of the cars drive functions.

While driven on electric alone, the i8 can travel up to 22 miles and reach a top speed of 75 mph before recharge. The estimated miles per gallon equivalency for gas and electric combined is in the 95 mpg area. There are also three drive modes–Sport, Comfort and Eco Pro–giving drivers a different driving experience with each setting. The 50/50 weight distribution produces exceptional handling in any mode as well.

Looking forward, BMW has produced an extraordinary car into the EV market and if you are in the market for a sports car that is as green as it gets but can still keep up with the competition, the BMW i8 would be a great investment. As long as you can come to terms with the $130,000 price tag.

But hey, there’s a reason we’re calling this our dream car of the month.
